The Power of Persistence

Have you ever wanted something so badly, but along the way wondered if you should just give up? Maybe you’ve been working toward a goal, trying to change a habit, build a relationship, or simply create a life that feels more fulfilling. Sometimes the journey doesn’t happen as quickly or easily as we had hoped. We get discouraged. We question ourselves. We wonder if it’s worth continuing.

This is where persistence comes in. Persistence is the ability to keep going, even when things get difficult. You don’t give up, even when the results aren’t showing up as quickly as you’d like. Persistence doesn’t mean you never get tired, frustrated, or discouraged, and it doesn’t mean you have to push through everything. Sometimes persistence means taking a break or changing your approach before getting back up and trying again. I think of persistence as the willingness to keep showing up for yourself.

Why Is Persistence So Important?

Most meaningful things in life take time, though that’s very easy to forget these days. We live in a world of instant gratification, where we can order dinner, send a message across the world, or have something delivered to our doorstep within hours. But personal growth doesn’t work that way. Building confidence takes time. Creating a healthy lifestyle takes time. Learning something new takes time. Healing takes time. Relationships take time. Persistence teaches us to trust the process instead of giving up simply because we haven’t reached the finish line yet. And there’s another beautiful benefit: every time you keep going, you build evidence that you can trust yourself. You begin to think, I can do hard things. I can figure this out. I can keep moving forward. That belief can change everything.

How Can We Become More Persistent?

Here are a few things that can help strengthen your persistence muscle.

1. Get Clear on Your Why

When you know why something matters to you, it becomes easier to keep going when things get difficult. Ask yourself: Why do I want this? Why is this important to me? How will my life feel when I accomplish it? Your whybecomes your anchor when motivation disappears.

2. Break Big Goals Into Small Steps

Sometimes we give up because the goal feels too big, we feel overwhelmed. Instead of looking at the entire mountain, focus on the next step. What can you do today? One small action may not seem like much, but small actions repeated over time create remarkable change.

 3. Expect Setbacks

Setbacks don’t mean you’ve failed; they are simply part of the journey. There will be days when things don’t go as planned. You might lose motivation, make a mistake, or take a few steps backward. Don’t make the mistake of turning one difficult day into a story about why you can’t succeed. Pause. Learn from it. Adjust your course and keep going.

4. Change Your Approach When Something Isn’t Working

Persistence doesn’t mean doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Sometimes you need to try a new strategy, ask for help, learn something new, or take a completely different path. Be persistent about your goal, but flexible about how you get there.

5. Celebrate Your Progress

Don’t wait until you reach the finish line to celebrate yourself. Notice the small wins: you showed up when you wanted to quit, you took one brave step, you handled something differently than you would have in the past. Celebrate those moments because they matter! Persistence is built one small victory at a time.

I’ve learned that some of the most rewarding things in life don’t happen because we were the most talented, the smartest, or the luckiest. They happen because we kept going. We kept believing and kept learning. We persisted.

So, if there’s something in your life right now that you’ve been thinking about giving up on, I invite you to pause before you make that decision.

Ask yourself: Is this something I truly want? Is there another way I can approach it? What is one small step I can take today?

You don’t have to know exactly how the story will end. Sometimes you simply need enough faith to take the next step. Because persistence has a way of turning I don’t know if I can into Look how far I’ve come.” Keep going. Your future self will be very grateful that you did.
