Your beliefs create your future

Have you ever had a moment in life that challenged everything you believed about your future? I certainly have. In 2018, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and I remember feeling that the future I had imagined suddenly disappeared.
My mind filled with questions, uncertainty, and fear. I became consumed with thoughts of what I would no longer be able to do, instead of focusing on what was still possible. Then one day, I realized something important: While I couldn’t control the diagnosis, I could control the thoughts and beliefs I chose to hold onto. I could believe that my body was capable of becoming stronger. I could believe that healing was still possible in many forms. I could believe that each healthy choice, every workout, every walk, every moment of gratitude, and every act of self-care, mattered.
Most importantly, I could believe that Parkinson’s did not get to define the quality or purpose of my life. Those beliefs didn’t change everything overnight, but they changed me by providing the hope and courage I needed on difficult days when I wanted to give up. Looking back, I can honestly say that changing my beliefs changed the direction of my life.
That’s the incredible power of belief.
In his research on positive psychology, Shawn Achor explains that our beliefs influence far more than our emotions—they shape our performance, resilience, health, relationships, and success. Rather than waiting for life to change before we feel optimistic, he encourages us to cultivate beliefs that help us thrive, even when life isn’t perfect. He shares seven core beliefs that consistently predict greater success and well-being:
- I can grow
Our abilities aren’t fixed. Every challenge becomes an opportunity to learn, improve, and become stronger. - My actions matter
Instead of feeling powerless, we recognize that even small, consistent choices create meaningful change over time. - Failure is feedback
Setbacks aren’t proof that we’re not good enough; they’re information that helps us adjust our path and keep moving forward. - Challenges help me grow
Difficult seasons often develop qualities that comfort never could—patience, resilience, wisdom, and courage. - Other people matter
The relationships we nurture become one of the greatest predictors of happiness and long-term success. We truly do rise together. - There is always possibility
Hope isn’t wishful thinking, it’s the willingness to believe that another solution, another opportunity, or another beginning is available—even when we can’t yet see it. - My future isn’t predetermined
Every day offers a new opportunity to make choices that move us toward the life we want to create.
What I love most about these beliefs is that none of them require perfection. They simply invite us to become more intentional. Louise Hay often reminded us that every thought we think is creating our future. If that’s true—and I believe it is—then it’s worth paying attention to the thoughts and beliefs that cross our minds each day.
Are they expanding your life? Or limiting it? The beautiful thing about beliefs is that they can be rewritten. The sentence I can’t can become I’m learning. I’ll never can become “What if I could? I’m stuck can become This is only where I am today.
Small shifts in language create powerful shifts in possibility. As you move through this week, I invite you to notice one belief that’s been holding you back. Then ask yourself: Is this belief absolutely true . . . or is it simply a story I’ve been telling myself? Your answer just might open a door you didn’t know existed.
Here’s to believing in possibilities, embracing growth, and creating a future that reflects the very best of who you are.
