How to Connect with Your Spirit Guides

There’s a quiet support system available to all of us and it doesn’t require effort, perfection, or special abilities. It only asks for openness and trust. These are our spirit guides.
A spirit guide is a loving, non-physical presence whose role is to support and guide us on our life path. Some people experience guides as ancestors, angels, or energetic teachers. Others simply feel them as intuition or a steady sense of knowing. However you understand them, spirit guides communicate through love, clarity, and alignment—not fear.
We experience our guides in subtle ways: A sudden insight. A gut feeling. Repeating signs. A message that lands at just the right moment. Often, our guides speak quietly—and patiently—waiting for us to slow down enough to listen.
One of my favorite books on this topic is The Guides Book by Maryann DiMarco. I appreciate her grounded approach and her reminder that spirit guides are always available to us, whether we realize it or not. Connection isn’t something we earn—it’s something we allow.
But if it’s something we can’t see or tangibly touch, you might feel unsure how you can begin to allow yourself to receive guidance from your spirit guides. Here is a gentle, simple way to begin (or deepen) your relationship with them:
Step 1: Check in with them
Begin by acknowledging their presence. You don’t need fancy words. A simple “I invite my spirit guides to be with me” is enough. Awareness opens the door.
Step 2: Get into the habit of asking
Checking in with your spirit guides opens the door; asking questions invites them in. Ask questions often. Get specific. Ask about your purpose, your next step, your dreams. And don’t be afraid to dream big. There’s no such thing as asking for too much.
Step 3: Listen
Listening doesn’t always mean hearing words. It may come as a feeling, a thought, a memory, or a sense of calm. Creating quiet moments gives us the necessary space for guidance to come through. It might be during a walk, meditation, or journaling—anything that lets you quiet your mind so you can be better attuned to receive messages from your spirit guides.
Step 4: Ask for a sign
If you’re unsure, ask for confirmation. It could be a symbol, a song, a repeated word, or a meaningful coincidence. Be open to how the sign shows up—it’s often more creative than we expect.
Step 5: Pay attention to the guidance you receive
Guidance is often gentle and consistent. Notice patterns. What keeps showing up? What feels light, expansive, and aligned? That’s usually your guides at work.
Step 6: Stay in the energy of gratitude
Gratitude raises your vibration and strengthens your connection. Thank your guides often—even before results appear. Appreciation keeps the channel open and flowing.
Step 7: Release the outcome and trust a plan better than your own
This part requires faith. Ask for guidance, then loosen your grip on how things should unfold. This can be challenging! Trust that what’s being orchestrated may be wiser than what your mind can imagine.
Step 8: Receive
Receiving is an act of trust. Let support come in through people, opportunities, ideas, and timing. You don’t have to struggle alone. You were never meant to.
Connecting with your spirit guides isn’t about leaving this world—it’s about being more supported within it. The more we ask, listen, and trust, the stronger the relationship becomes. Our spirit guides are always present and available to help guide us through life. We just have to be willing to slow down and allow ourselves to receive their wisdom.
